The challenge
Rental equipment faces an increased risk of theft. There are many reasons why thieves find it easier with rental equipment – such as longer transport times, rental under a false identity and less care taken by renters to secure the equipment.
On top of this comes the considerable value of the stolen equipment: in the USA, for example, a stolen construction machine is worth around USD 29,000 on average, while only 21 % of stolen equipment is recovered.
These are the challenges facing companies that rent out equipment to a wide range of growing industries. The largest share of the rental market is held by the construction industry, where generators, concrete pumps, containers, skips, portable toilets and other construction site supplies are targeted by thieves. Equipment rental is also common in other sectors, such as healthcare, where nursing beds, patient lifts, oxygen concentrators, ventilators and similar devices may be affected, and the events industry, where amplifiers, lighting, loudspeakers or mixing desks are the usual loot for criminals.

The solution
To tackle the theft of rental equipment in construction, healthcare, event technology and other industries, the new Teltonika TAT240 asset tracker with tamper detection is used. This GPS tracker can easily be attached to metal surfaces using the supplied magnetic mount, making it very convenient to fit to construction equipment such as generators or compressors, as well as to medical devices and event technology.
How it works: Depending on the settings, the TAT240 regularly sends movement-based periodic reports at defined intervals or according to a weekly schedule. In the event of an attempted theft, the “Recovery mode” scenario is triggered, enabling frequent position reports – so the owner can easily locate the equipment with the Teltonika asset tracker.
If a thief discovers the tracker and tries to remove it, the TAT240’s tamper detection immediately sends an alarm message. It uses advanced magnetic technology that is among the most reliable on the market today. Detecting the tampering allows the owner to act immediately to prevent the theft. In addition, the location data showing the exact place of the tampering provides further help.
The Teltonika TAT240 offers further useful features, such as movement-based tracking: the device is only tracked when it is moving, not when it is waiting in the warehouse for its next rental. Movement events can be used to detect when the device has started moving or has stopped. In addition, Bluetooth® LE support and the “Lost BLE Sensor” function help with managing equipment indoors when the GPS signal is weak or unavailable.
