ATM security with FMC650
Ensuring the security of financial transactions and banking equipment is of central importance. Physical attacks on ATMs in the EU rose by 24% in 2023, and in the USA such incidents even increased by 165% from 2021 to 2022. Against the backdrop of this growing threat, Teltonika offers advanced GPS tracking solutions to increase ATM security.

The challenge
ATMs are particularly vulnerable because they are publicly accessible and contain large amounts of cash – making them prime targets for theft. They are located in a wide variety of places, from busy city centres to remote, less secure areas, and are therefore exposed to a wide range of potential threats. Public accessibility is convenient, but it also increases the risk of being targeted by criminals seeking quick financial gain.
The substantial cash reserves in ATMs make them considerably more attractive to thieves and turn them into a lucrative target. Criminals are often well prepared and use advanced tools and methods to overcome the physical security of the machines. Despite their robust and reinforced construction, ATMs are not immune to attacks using explosives, cutting tools or vehicles used to forcibly remove them from their location.
Moreover, the very strategic placement of ATMs, intended to serve customers efficiently, inadvertently contributes to their vulnerability. Machines in more remote or poorly lit locations are particularly at risk, as criminals have more opportunity there to carry out their plans unnoticed. Financial institutions and banks must therefore continuously implement innovative and robust security measures to protect these valuable assets and ensure the security of their operations.
The solution
To meet the security requirements of ATMs, Teltonika offers a solution built around the FMC650 GPS tracker. This PROFESSIONAL category device is ideally suited to effectively securing ATMs both indoors and outdoors.
How it works – the FMC650 is installed inside the ATM and connected to the mobile network via its external antenna. This ensures stable data transmission even through the steel structure of the reinforced machine. The tracker is connected to the ATM's power supply and communication systems, enabling continuous monitoring and data transmission.
In addition to the FMC650, Teltonika EYE sensors are used to extend the security solution. These compact devices connect to the Teltonika GPS tracker via Bluetooth®. EYE sensors detect various events such as door openings and movement – crucial indicators of possible tampering or theft attempts. If an ATM door is opened without authorisation, the EYE sensor immediately sends an alarm to the FMC650, which forwards this information to the monitoring system, helping to prevent unwanted access.
The FMC650 also features an integrated accelerometer for tilt detection. If the angle of the ATM changes significantly – an indication of possible tampering or movement – the accelerometer registers the event and triggers an alarm. The function detects changes in the device's orientation and, when the ignition signal is off, can start a timer during which it watches for significant changes in angle.
The interplay of these technologies and Teltonika devices results in a comprehensive security solution that not only acts as a deterrent but also enables rapid recovery in an emergency. Instant alarms and tracking allow the authorities to intervene quickly and considerably reduce the financial and operational consequences of an ATM theft.
The solution also supports preventive maintenance, so that ATMs always function optimally and downtime is reduced. The FMC650's two SIM slots and its ability to connect to the Iridium Edge® satellite modem ensure reliable coverage – ideal for ATMs in remote areas, to guarantee uninterrupted monitoring and communication.

Your benefits
Better theft protection
With built-in Teltonika FMC650 GPS trackers, ATMs become considerably less attractive to criminals. The knowledge that the machines are equipped with advanced tracking and monitoring systems deters potential thieves and reduces the likelihood of theft attempts.
Rapid response in an emergency
During a theft in progress, the FMC650 and EYE sensor provide the relevant data for rapid intervention by the authorities. Instant alarms and precise tracking facilitate the swift recovery of stolen ATMs and minimise financial losses and operational disruption.
Comprehensive security monitoring
The combination of EYE sensors and FMC650 ensures continuous monitoring of ATMs. The sensors detect door openings and any unauthorised movement and immediately send alarms to the monitoring system. This helps to prevent tampering and unauthorised access.
Better compliance with insurance requirements
The combination of FMC650 and EYE sensors can help financial institutions and banks meet insurance requirements and potentially lower premiums. A demonstrably proactive approach to security and risk management can lead to more favourable insurance terms.
Customisable and scalable solution
The GPS tracking solution can be flexibly adapted to the specific requirements of different financial institutions. Whether for a single ATM or a large network – the system can be adapted and scaled to deliver optimum security and operational benefits.

Case study (Teltonika)
In Saudi Arabia, Teltonika FMC650 GPS trackers were deployed in a large-scale project by a Teltonika customer to improve the security of more than 2,500 ATMs. This tracker model was chosen for its powerful external antenna, which maintains reception even through the hard steel structure of an ATM.
In addition, EYE sensors were installed that detect door openings and immediately send an alarm. The integrated accelerometer provided tilt detection to monitor unauthorised movements. This comprehensive solution not only improved security through theft prevention but also enabled efficient monitoring and timely maintenance – thereby considerably increasing the operational reliability of ATMs across the country.
