Lone worker protection with the GH5200

It is estimated that there are around 53 million lone workers worldwide. They face particular challenges that require specific safety measures and procedures to ensure their well-being and safety. Companies and organisations should take appropriate measures to meet these requirements. Autonomous GPS tracking with devices from Teltonika Telematics offers a practical solution for this.

The challenge

Did you know that, according to a study by StaySafe, 41% of recorded incidents involving lone workers are caused by external factors such as accidents, illness, aggression and violence? To clarify: lone workers are people who work alone for a certain period of time without immediate or direct supervision. They face different challenges from their colleagues on site. Some examples:

Risk assessment: Lone workers are exposed to particular risks that do not affect other employees. These can include workplace violence, stress and mental strain or impaired well-being, a person's medical fitness for working alone, and the nature of the workplace – especially in rural or remote areas.

Industry-specific challenges: Depending on the industry, these employees face different challenges. In sectors such as construction, utilities and agriculture, for example, lone workers may find themselves in medical emergencies in which they cannot rely on help from colleagues nearby.

Tracking: For anyone responsible for the safety of lone or mobile workers in remote locations, one of the biggest challenges is knowing in real time where the person is at any given moment and tracking their movements.

To meet these challenges and improve the safety of lone workers, companies and organisations can (and should) address them as effectively as possible. Teltonika Telematics can help.

The solution

For this solution, we use the Teltonika GH5200, an autonomous personal GPS tracker for personal tracking and safety. It has 5 configurable buttons, is extensively configurable, can be used autonomously thanks to its long-lasting internal battery and offers features including 2G connectivity, Bluetooth® LE and an accelerometer. With two-way voice communication and practical LED indicators that can be adapted to specific requirements, it is suitable for numerous applications, including workforce management and lone worker protection. The device can be monitored in real time around the clock via the way4net Portal.

All in all, the GH5200 is a reliable and versatile GPS tracker for personal safety, employee protection and outdoor activities. It allows you to track employees' movements and ensure their safety in emergencies – an excellent choice for staff who work alone.

How it works: Every lone worker concerned receives a GH5200 personal GPS tracker. The main function of the device is tracking the person in question. It uses GNSS satellite technology to determine the precise location of the device (and therefore of the person wearing it). The tracker transmits this position data to the way4net Portal so that employers or safety managers can track the person's location in real time.

Important: The accuracy of the distance calculation depends on the environment in which the GPS device is used and on other conditions.

The GH5200 has an easily accessible emergency button. When pressed, it immediately sends an alarm to the portal signalling that the person is in distress or needs help. Handy: two-way voice communication for emergencies with up to 5 call/SMS recipients allows the person in need to send a text message or set up a call immediately when help is needed urgently.

In addition, the device is equipped with pre-programmed scenarios, alarms and detections for motionless situations, such as “man-down” detection or “movement/no movement” events. These can trigger instant alerts when certain conditions are met. For example, if the device detects no movement over a certain period of time, it can trigger an alarm indicating a possible emergency.

The GH5200 autonomous tracker also features a Bluetooth® LE wireless connection through which it can receive data from external accessories, such as the Teltonika EYE Sensor. This allows the device to monitor additional parameters such as temperature, humidity and movement. This is particularly helpful in working environments where these factors can be critical to employee safety.

Finally, the GH5200 can be managed remotely: firmware and configuration updates are automated, and devices can be organised in smart groups and a multi-level account hierarchy. This allows employers or safety managers to manage and maintain the devices remotely with minimal effort and maximum results.

With the GH5200 personal GPS tracker, management can track the exact location of your lone workers in real time. This enables immediate help in an emergency and provides additional safety and peace of mind – for employees and the organisation alike.

Efficient use of resources

Tracking helps companies use resources effectively by sending help exactly where it is needed. In critical situations, this can save valuable time and possibly even save lives.

Higher productivity

Knowing that they are being monitored can motivate employees to stay focused and productive. GPS tracking data also helps identify inefficiencies in routes or workflows, contributing to more effective ways of working.

Compliance with occupational safety requirements

Using the Teltonika GH5200 can help your organisation comply with occupational health and safety regulations, demonstrates your commitment to the well-being of your workforce and can help avoid costly fines.

Accurate reports and clear accountability

Trackers like this provide a wealth of data for detailed analysis. This strengthens accountability, supports performance reviews and provides valuable insights for decision-making.

Reduced legal risks

Should an accident nevertheless occur, GPS tracking data provides an objective record of events and helps resolve potential legal disputes.

Better motivation and employee retention

Investing in the safety of your employees with the GH5200 shows that you care about their well-being. This can boost motivation, foster loyalty and ultimately increase employee retention.
