DualCam solution for delivery services

Recent upheavals in the global economy have triggered many changes, including in online shopping behaviour and the popularity of e-commerce – changes that are expected to be felt for many years to come. This has led to a sharp rise in demand for courier and delivery services, but unfortunately also to some serious problems. To support delivery companies, Teltonika has developed a comprehensive, modern vehicle telematics solution.

The challenge

Did you know that, according to a survey and a new report on e-commerce trends, 90% of businesses in Europe and North America saw at least a slight increase in their online sales – and 50% of respondents stated that these grew by more than 100% during the outbreak of the global COVID-19 pandemic in 2020?

Higher demand for groceries, clothing and medicines, panic buying, rapidly growing subscription services and higher online sales for retailers are one thing. But lockdowns and strict restrictions have also led to disrupted supply chains, understaffed customer service, a shortage of delivery drivers, parcel delays, costly mistakes and so on.

Inevitably, the outbreak of the coronavirus triggered a boom in delivery services and in demand for couriers. Today, numerous websites, mobile apps and social media pages offer all kinds of deliveries right to the doorstep. Courier services are booming, delivering to online shoppers who would rather not take the risk of going outside.

But here is the problem: there is a shortage of qualified and experienced delivery drivers available for hire. In the article “The new in-demand jobs: delivery drivers and tax specialists”, the Financial Times explains that many recruiters in the United Kingdom agree that the pandemic is driving demand above all for workers who move things – such as drivers. The situation is very similar in other countries. On top of that, drivers who have already been hired often suffer from heavy workloads, longer working hours, stress and lack of sleep, which leads to a whole range of problems.

Consider this: inappropriate driving style and inappropriate behaviour are bound to lead to higher fuel consumption, rising fleet maintenance costs, road accidents and fines, loss of or damage to the goods being delivered, rising insurance costs, higher medical costs, injuries or fatalities, downtime and delivery delays, customer complaints and a poor company reputation – and thus to fewer orders, loss of market share and declining profitability.

And what about driver safety? That is a challenge too. According to a report by BBC News, thousands of delivery drivers face intimidation, serious injuries and even death in order to bring food to consumers' doorsteps. Delivery services therefore have to deal with profound global changes in consumer habits, service quality, fleet safety and delivery capacity.

Against this background, the Teltonika team has developed a practical, modern solution that effectively supports delivery and courier companies with these serious problems: the Teltonika DualCam solution.

The solution

This comprehensive solution combines the best of both worlds: the Teltonika DualCam digital front- and rear-facing dashcam recorder and the FMC125 GPS vehicle tracker from the PROFESSIONAL category. The two devices are connected to each other via the RS232 serial interface. In addition, the devices can be configured remotely and supplied with firmware updates. Please note: to use this functionality on your FMC125 or other supported trackers, firmware version 03.27.00.Rev.100 or higher is required.

Like every Teltonika GPS device, this vehicle tracker offers a wide range of well-designed scenarios that capture specific events and generate the associated data. To tackle the driving-related problems mentioned above and activate the DualCam, we use the scenarios Green Driving (also known as Eco Driving), crash detection, overspeeding detection and excessive idling detection.

Recording Green Driving events

With this scenario, you can set up and activate the capture of 3 vehicle parameters: “Max Acceleration”, “Max Braking” and “Max Cornering”. If a preset value is exceeded, the FMC125 registers the event and sends the data to the way4net Portal. A video of up to 30 seconds of this event can then be requested from the Teltonika DualCam via an SMS/GPRS command sent from the portal to the device. Video recordings or photos of the relevant moments can be sent to the portal on request based on preset time intervals.

In this way, comprehensive information (video recordings, images and vehicle data) is collected for every triggered event and is available for prompt analysis. This helps fleet management assess a situation and, if necessary, take action against problematic driving behaviour.

Recording crash events

In this example, we set up and activate the capture of 2 vehicle parameters: “Threshold” and “Duration”. The GPS tracker can detect events ranging from a light tap on the device to a serious accident. If a preset parameter value is exceeded, the FMC125 registers the event and immediately and automatically sends a complete data package to the way4net Portal – including a video of up to 30 seconds of this event from the Teltonika DualCam.

To support businesses and insurers even better, 2 configurable crash trace modes are available: “Trace Change” and “Trace Full”. When crash events are detected, accurate and detailed data (including footage) is available to the responsible managers and the insurers involved for monitoring, analysis and the preparation of corresponding reports. This allows a road accident to be resolved as efficiently as possible, saving time and valuable resources.

Recording overspeeding events

With this scenario, you can set up and activate the capture of the “Max Speed” parameter. As above: if the preset value is exceeded, the FMC125 registers the event and sends the data to the way4net Portal. A video of up to 30 seconds of this event can then be requested from the Teltonika DualCam via an SMS/GPRS command sent from the portal to the device.

Video recordings or photos can be sent to the portal on request based on preset time intervals. As already described, the data of a triggered overspeeding event is available for analysis and helps to resolve the incident. To increase effectiveness, this detection can be combined with the “Manual Geofence” scenario.

Recording excessive idling

With this scenario, you can set up and activate the capture of 2 vehicle parameters: “Time To Stopped” and “Time to Moving”. As before: if a preset value is exceeded, the FMC125 registers the event and sends the data to the way4net Portal. A video of up to 30 seconds of this event can then be requested from the DualCam via an SMS/GPRS command sent from the portal to the device.

Video recordings or photos can be sent to the portal on request based on preset time intervals. As above, the data of every triggered idling event is available for prompt analysis and helps to resolve the incident as effectively as possible.

As a result, fleet management can now promptly collect and analyse comprehensive data and quickly identify and improve inappropriate driver behaviour: through necessary disciplinary measures, the promotion of safer driving, fewer accidents, lower fleet operating and maintenance costs, greater efficiency and, where needed, better driving skills, lower company car insurance costs, robust evidence in court for faster settlement of insurance claims, protection of drivers against staged accidents (crash-for-cash fraud) and so on. On request, events from further scenarios can also be added and recorded.

The new Teltonika DualCam solution combines the best of both worlds – a wide-angle dual dashcam with support for High Efficiency Video Coding (H.265/HEVC), offering better data compression as well as lower bandwidth and storage requirements, and a Teltonika GPS vehicle tracker. Together, they effectively tackle the problems mentioned and support fleet managers, drivers, passengers, other road users, the police and society as a whole. Everyone benefits.
